New PS3 SKU Almost Confirmed

Everyone is almost certain that the 80GB PS3 is being phased out to make room for a new, more-equipped version of the PS3, probably still without backwards compatibility. This rumor has been going around for almost 2 weeks now after BestBuy took the SKU off their website and Sony refused to make a comment for a while. Then, a GameStop conference call confirmed that the 80GB system was no longer being made, but IGN’s sources at GameStop revealed some more meaty details.

IGN, in accordance with Ars Technica, is reporting that the new PS3 will feature a 120GB harddrive with the Dual Shock 3, the version that is suppose to have rumble. This probably brings joy to those that were thinking of buying a PS3 and to those that were hoping for rumble to come to the PS3 by default. The price will probably be $499 to replace the recently phased out 80GB model. Even though none of this is official, I’d say it’s best to wait to buy a PS3 if you were thinking about it.

I would think with a higher price point that they would go higher than 120GB, as to beat out the Elite. 160-250 would be the ballpark. I’m sure this will come with the inclusion of Dualshock 3, however I believe it WILL include BC. Sony however will not admit this until the last moment so they can get a sales spike in the 80GB models, similar to their tactic with the price drop of the 60GB before the 80GB. Currently North American is the Only area with a BC console. The 20GB and the 60GB have been discontinued in Japan as of Jan 10, leaving them with the 40GB, and Europe hasn’t had BC in a while. Sony isn’t going to drop it, their just holding off on it till this next model.

I really don’t see a need for a 120gb hard drive. Only a small amount of people would utilize that amount. I say focus on profit and gettting out great games. Anyone wanting to upgrade can replace the hard drive or utilize a plug in external drive. heck most laptops at that price only come with a 120. Sony should not worry about the elite. Even at 40gb the PS3 is a better value then the Elite. The elite needs a $100 add on to go wireless and a $180 add on to go HD. There is no competition. The only thing the new SKU really needs was to get rid of Motor Storm to increase its profit and possible put back in the emotion engine.

Been waiting for a new version. 120 gb isn’t going to break the bank (vs 80 gb models) it’s the other extras that make the difference. Might have to wait until this version (and Gran Turismo) releases to pick up a PS3

@ DOn, 180 add on to go HD what are you talking about? Considering the 3 hefty installs that MGS4 will require its probably not a bad idea to get 120gb of storage at least, the game has something like 43gb woth of cutscenes and some hug instlls.
