It’s no secret that the PS3 has been lacking in really good games during it’s life compared to the Wii and the Xbox 360. And everyone knows that many good ones aren’t really going to be coming out in the foreseeable future. That’s why whenever a good game is rumored to be coming out everyone that has a PS3 starts to get really excited and in some radical cases, jump for joy. Lair was one of those games to some PS3 owners. However, that hardly turned out to be the case.
PSM reviewed it first and gave it a 5, which is a hard hit because many Playstation owners look to the magazine for good, solid reviews of games. The next major source to give it a bad score is Gamespot, which gave it a 4.5 citing a horrible control scheme as the reason. The control scheme, also seemed to be the probelem that PSM had with the game. I guess that takes Lair off the games to buy list for Playstation 3 owners.
However don’t fret, Warhawk seems to be getting good reviews with the exception of the PSM reviews. Many people are very happy with the game and you can pick it up for only $40 off the PSN.

That’s too bad, a control scheme in this day and age should be the last thing to ruin a game. You would think that someone on the development team would have actually picked up and played the game before the finishing stages. That is just lazy and very poor developing when a game is unplayable due to huge, and probably easy to fix, issues with the control scheme. On top of this, the game is supposed to be around 6-8 hours to complete. So full price for an unplayable and terribly short game? I don’t know how Sony is even going ahead and releasing this game, seems like it will do more harm than good. For me it seems like pushing it back and releasing it this holiday season would be a better strategy.
Wasn’t Lair supposed to be like the Holy Grail for Sixaxis? What a major let down. Why didn’t they at least offer traditional flight controls as an option?

Lair is just garbage. Sorry, but it’s true.
Seems to me Gamespot just wanted to undercut IGN’s 4.9 review to seem more ‘ruthless’ and badass. To be honest though, I only held a brief curiosity for the game when I saw the first teaser waaaay back, but soon lost interest when I saw the game play footage. It reminded me too much of that ‘Reign of Fire’ tie-in game (but medieval) and I thought that game was pretty piss poor.
This is ridiculous. They are simply going lower than each other to get publicity because publicity = more visits = more clicks on sponsors. I played Lair at PAX last week and IMO it would get a 6/10. Its better than average.
The controls of Lair are tricky but marking it down because of that is dumb. If you bother to spend time learning how to fly Lair works fantastically well.
There is a review here which pretty much matches what I thought of it:

I totally agree with you David. Even though I’m not interested in the game myself, most sites who gave it poor reviews just sound like little pussies who can’t get used to the SIXAXIS controls quick enough. “I just can’t do it! It’s too hard! This game sucks!” (Throws down controller). Other sites admitted that the motion controls may not be 100% reliable, but said it was well worth mastering it.
People blame lazy developing on this failed game. Ever thought it was just the fact that sixaxis just sucks? Sony is trying to make the magic happen with their controller (1st major attempt being Lair), and it’s going down in flames. I’m not a 360 fanboy at all, but gamers deserve better at this point. Do yourself a favor, and get Bioshock, cause everyone deserves better than this Lair garbage.
TCave. You may not be a 360 fanboy but you are an idiot if you think the sixaxis system sucks because of one game getting a few bad reviews. It’s strange that you are ignoring all of the reviews that like the control system. That kind of biased stupidity only usually comes from fanboys. So does advising someone to buy an FPS (Bioshock) instead of a combat flying game. Surely Warhawk (which uses sixaxis very well) would be the obvious game to advise a potential purchaser to buy instead of Lair? Unless of course you are also biased against Warhawk as well for some reason?
Here is another review of the game where they liked the controls:

TCave…If u r a 360 fanboy and are ashamed to admit it, I quite understand.
All you guys defending the sixaxis saying there’s a learning curve involved- wtf – you tilt it to the right the dragon should turn right, tilt it left it should turn left -there shouldn’t be any bullshit “learning or getting used to”. There’s no learning or getting used to any of the Wii’s games using the controls. You guys piss me off trashing professional game reviewers as being dumb or lazy for telling the truth about something.
“And everyone knows that many good ones aren’t really going to be coming out in the foreseeable future.”
That’s right, because they don’t have Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Haze, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Ratchet & Clank 5, GT5 Prologue coming out before Christmas do they? And MGS4 plus others in Q1 next year!
Oh wait, yes they do and they’re just the ones off the top of my head! Which means you either ill-informed (in which case you shouldn’t make sweeping judgements without research) or just a anti-Sony fanboy (much more likely).
It really pisses me off how it’s suddenly “cool” to be anti-Sony, seriously if this game got an 9.5 it wouldn’t have been reported anywhere, give it a 4.5 and everyone jumps on the “we hate Sony too” band wagon. It’s no wonder review sites are happy when a PS3 game gets a low score!
This game may suck, but I’ve rarely seen a game be knocked down so much for a steep learning curve before. More likely LAIR is the prime target to show Sony that the SIXAXIS has failed, bring back rumble.
I personally like some of the uses for the SIXAXIS in games, Warhawk is an excellent example. If the control system is crap, blame the developers not the controller, because it can be done…
Also you’ve got to be impressed with the fact that this is the first PS3 game that is fully playable on your PSP via an internet connection!
I’m too busy playing Warhawk to notice dickhead!
Sony, the Sixaxis controller, and Lair need to rot in Hell……in Satan’s asshole! Sony sucks so much fucken suck, it FUCKS! It fucken sucks so much COCKsucker mother fucker BULL FUCK THAT!!!!!!!
Great info and straight to the point. I am not sure if this is in fact the best place to ask but do you folks have any ideea where to employ some professional writers? Thx
