Like the 20GB SKU before it, the newly priced 60GB SKU of the PS3 is due to disappear from retail shelves once the current batch is sold out. This news comes to us after Sony’s big deal about a $100 price cut for the PS3, which essentially is only temporary, since there are no plans to ship new batches of 60GB systems. So really, if you are not one of the people who will snag a 60GB PS3 in the next few months, you will still have to pay $600 for the slightly upgraded 80GB PS3, without any alternative (although this version does, at least for now, come with MotorStorm).
This story is confirmed by Kaz Hirai in this interview, where he states that Sony is, “No longer in production [of the 60GB SKU in North America]“. I’m not sure this is the smartest move Sony could have made here, especially with the potential that the cheaper 60GB had to sell in North America. Sony just doesn’t want to be in the multi-SKU game when it comes to the PS3 I guess.
