Today was a big day at DigitalLife, and one of the most exciting things that I got my hands on was Crysis. Having missed a chance earlier, I was extremely eager to play this highly anticipated PC game after hearing word that the Demo was delayed an pushed back to late October.
The build I played was still fairly early, but the physics and graphics that make this game tick were really on display during my demo of the title. The first thing I noticed when I started off was how sharp the visuals looked. The environment was extremely realistic, and truly did look just like a real tropical island. Everything from the palm trees and their leaves to the sand on the beaches, to the flowing water looked better than that of any other title I have seen to date. There is not much room for criticism when it comes to Crysis’ graphics department, but what about the physics? Well there is no need to worry, as the physics in the game are just as impressive as the visuals. Virtually everything in the game is destructible, and each small piece of the stuff that you blow up can be used as its own object or weapon. A fun way to experience this comcept is by shooting a palm tree until it breaks in two pieces, and then picking up the fallen part and throwing it at an enemy. Or perhaps you would rather blow the wall off of a building and hit people with its siding. Almost anything and everything you can think of is doable in this game.
As far as the other gameplay elements are concerned, Crysis looks solid. During combat, while your weapons are inportant, you wont stand a chance unless you use your suit abilities to your advantage as well. With various abilities to choose from, such as super speed and strength, all the way to stealth and armor upgrades, there is a way out of any jam you might find yourself in. Couple these with the various weapons and weapon variations found in the game, and you have a shooter which is alot more than just a pretty face.
All in all, Crysis is not only one of the best looking games I have ever seen, but it might just turn out to be a fantastic shooter as well.
