Major Nelson posted a list of the most played games during this year, no surprises with Halo 3 at the top of X360 list. TMNT seemed to be extremely popular in the Arcade section and Halo still reigns supreme with the Xbox. This is slightly related to Microsoft’s previous announcement that they have sold 17.7 million Xbox 360s around the world and since the numbers release before September were around 13.4 million, the holiday season brought in an impressive 4.3 million consoles alone. This is probably due to the immense success of Halo 3, which sold 8.1 million copies in 3 months and Mass Effect, which has sold 1.6 million copies in just a month.

Top Xbox 360 Games

1. Halo 3
2. Gears of War
3. Call of Duty 4
4. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas
5. Call of Duty 3
6. Crackdown
7. Oblivion
8. Guitar Hero II

ps3-v-wiiarticle.jpg

Needless to say everyone was surprised when the PS3 has beaten the Wii in hardware sales for the week ending on  November 11th. But, they seem to have done it again for the  week ending on November 17th. The PS3 sold 53,000 consoles putting it 20,000 units above the Wii, which sold 36,000. This is despite Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles being released an debuting with 106,000 sales. Is this the beggining of a turn in tides in the console race or is it just the aftermath of a pricedrip to $399. Let’s wait and find out.

Wii Passes Xbox 360 in Sales… No One is Suprised

ng_sales.png

Vgchartz.com reports that as of August 23rd the Wii has surpassed Xbox 360 in total amount of worldwide sales. This marks a kinda historic moment as Nintendo becomes the console leader. This is the first time since 1994 when the Gameboy and SNES reigned over the video game world. The official numbers are 10.57 million Wii’s compared to the 10.51 million Xbox 360’s and 4.32 million Ps3’s. This number will also only continue to grow with the holiday season coming up and a myriad of Wii titles that are coming in the next year. The Xbox 360 still has a lead in America, but it is far behind in Japan compared to the Wii and even the PS3. The numbers also show how far behind the PS3 compared to the other two consoles. With the Wii captivating hardcore gamers all the way to people that have never played video games, that doesn’t leave much room for the Xbox 360 and PS3 to grow their marketshare.

HD Update: HDDVD Sales Lag Behind Blu-Ray’s

hd_dvd_bluray_copies.jpg

Home Media Research recently reported in a study that Blu-Ray Discs have sold 1.6 million copies, while HDDVD’s have sold 795,000 discs from the beginning of the year till July 1st. That puts the BluRay Discs outselling HDDVD’s 2:1 in the US. This can be attributed many exclusives that were present in the beginning of the year; however, the features-exclusive HDDVD of 300 seems to be lagging behind the 300 Blu-Ray even though lacks many of the features of the 300 HDDVD like picture-in-picture commentary. Many people believe this will also reflect the second-half of the year because of the various types of players available for BluRay, as opposed to the HDDVD’s players. Is this the last straw for HDDVD?
