PS3 Cell Processor Shrinks to 45nm, Hopefully Followed by a PS3 Price Drop

2068_8waycell.jpg

Everyone has been waiting for the PS3 to follow the way of many modern computers and technology devices in reducing the size of its processor. In the first step of this process, IBM has announced that they have reduced the normally 65nm Cell Processor that powers the PS3 to 45nm. The advantages of a 45nm processor are numerous: cooler temperatures, less power consumption, and more speed will become new standards. The power consumption should be reduced somewhere around 40%. The processor will also make it cheaper for Sony to make the PS3 because of the decreased die-size of the processor associated with the new 45nm processors.

Sony will definitely buy these processors to put into their newly made consoles and make a profit. The new processors are actually cheaper, but the question is whether buyers will see more affordable prices as well. Seeing that Sony just had a profitable quarter but is still nowhere near being profitable on the PS3, they might hold back the price-cuts until winter or (maybe) the release for that Slim-PS3.

Microsoft Confirms HDMI Output for Xbox 360 Premium Consoles [Update]

x360-hdmi.jpg

Yep, the rumors were true indeed. If you pick up a new Xbox 360 Premium Console check for an HDMI sticker on the outside of the box, because the latest batch of the newly priced system is sporting HDMI ports standard. That’s right, now you can pick up an Xbox 360 with HDMI out and a 20gb HDD for only $349.99 (and this price drop is actually for real). Talk about a deal!

These new versions of the Premium SKU will likely [soon] include 65nm chips and superior heatsinks, which will allow the console to run cooler and help deal with the RLoD issues that so many 360 owners have had to deal with. Between these improvements and the new 3 year warantee for all systems, it seems like Microsoft is finally doing more than their share to lower the rediculously high Xbox 360 failure rate.

That’s not all you get though, as many stores are confirming that a free copy of Top Spin 2 is to be included with the console as well. So if you have been thinking about getting yourself a 360, now is definitely the time!

Update: When the Premium Xbox 360 consoles get the 65nm chips, the product will be marked ‘Falcon’ instead of ‘Zephyr’, as the ‘Zephyr’ motherboard is the one the elite has and the 65nm models will have the Falcon motherboard. Also, some stores are offering Table Tennis with the console rather than Top Spin 2.

X360’s 65nm Chips Hit Retail This Fall; in Production Two Months

360_cpu.jpgEveryone is really scared of the RLODs and who wouldn’t be? To all those that have been waiting for the new and improved 360’s with 65nm chips shouldn’t have to wait much longer. Microsoft’s manufacturing partner, Charted Semiconductor, said that these chips have been in production over the last two months. This puts their retail date for fall. The 65nm chips allow for cooler chips and consequently faster ones. Charted Semiconductor also mentioned 45nm chips will also be heading to 360’s. Just in case anyone is having any really wise ideas about waiting for the 45 nm chips, they are heading for late 2008 to early 2009. Just stick with the 65nm for now.
