Gamestop Makes a Lot of Money this Quarter

It seems as if video game retailers may not be as affected by the recession as other entertainment industries; some very convincing evidence for this statement can be found in Gamestop’s quarterly earnings report that was released today. Gamestop raked in a record $57.2 million in profit from a gross income of $1.8 billion in the second quarter of 2008. Compared with the situation a year ago, when Gamestop made $21.8 million in profit from $1.4 billion gross revenue, it is surprising. That is a 162% yearly increase in profit and a 38% increase in revenue. This is quite an accomplishment in today’s economy, and a good sign for video games making a place in mainstream entertainment. Gamestop cited GTA IV, MGS4, NCAA ‘09, Wii Fit, and Battlefield: BC as the top 5 sellers in the quarter, in that order, also noting that GTA IV’s first five days of release were out of the quarter. Things can only go up in the second half of the year with major blockbusters like Gears of War 2, Rock Band 2, Fable 2, Guitar Hero: World Tour, Call of Duty: World at War, Fallout 3, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, and many more set for release.

PC to Get Assassin’s Creed in March

Assassin’s Creed PC

Ubisoft’s stunning medieval assassination experience will find itself in the PC market in March. The game had already picked up 2.5 million sales within a month, and the number sold has only increases recently. This PC port should bring an even wider audience, with a a lower $50 price tag. Ubisoft plans to address some of the complaints of the repeition in the game by integrating four brand new investigation techniques into the upcoming release. With the established acclaim of the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, consumers should already have a reason to pick up the PC version.

Assassin’s Creed DS Screens

Even though Assassin’s Creed: Altair Chronicles is set to come out on February 5, 2008, the details have always been a little scarce for the game. We just confirmed the game even being in existence a few months ago and there has been little news since, except when the subtitle was announced for the game. But IGN has posted some screens of the Nintendo DS version of Assassin’s Creed which confirm a few things. Some of them are that the bottom screen will be used for a map and that the game is an action game and not a the type of game with card moves, like Metal Gear Acid. The game doesn’t look half bad on the DS, but I can see that it will probably disappoint people who don’t normally play the DS. Let’s just check out the reviews because the game could get a little annoying or buggy on the DS. Check out more screens after the jump.

Assassin’s Creed Gets A Prequel on the DS

asscreedds369_screen.jpg

The prequel focuses on following Altair around as opposed to the futuristic character. The game will elaborate on Altair’s back story and use the touch screen to do many of the tasks simply assigned to buttons in the 360 version like pick-pocketing. The developer for the game is going to be GameLoft and not Ubisoft Montreal, the original developers of Assassin’s Creed for Xbox 360. They developed the cell phone version of the game, but who knows how it will turn out. The release of this game cover basically just confirms the game after it was featured on numerous Nintendo 2008 release lists. Get excited…kinda.

E3 2007: Assassin’s Creed Screens

assassins-creed-20070710001348912.jpg

IGN was able to play a demo of  Assassins’s Creed today and their was a lot of praise for it. They say that the way you can interact with the world in so many ways is amazing, with the ability to climb or interact with anything that is two inches or bigger. Another major feature of the game was the scale of the city that the demo was in. The city is described as being huge and beautiful with so much to do. After reading the preview and checking out the new screens, I am more excited for this game than ever.
