There is a general consensus amongst reviewers in our industry that Bioshock, the singleplayer shooter which took the Xbox 360 by storm last year, is one of the greatest games in recent memory. I mean, the reception of the title was unbelievably good across the board, and it even managed to earn our very own Game of the Year award for 2007. So how do you follow a game like Bioshock? It is almost impossible to create a straight sequel, and a prequel would have to change the gameplay completely. I guess you just have to try something completely different…
Enter Mr. Bubbles’ Adventure, the upcoming action/adventure game that will allow Wii gamers to take on the role of a ‘Big Daddy’ who’s job is to protect a ‘Little Sister’ at all costs. There are no screens or videos just yet, but we do have confirmation that the game will be set just before the events of Bioshock, and that the two storylines will cross paths somewhere along the line. On the gameplay side of things, we only know that the game will feature a first person view, and that the Wiimote will be used to control the ‘Big Daddy’s’ arm-drill that we have all come to know and love.
Wii players can look foreward to experiencing a Big Daddy fight from the other perspective when this game hits shelves in Q3 of this year.
2K won’t let BioShock get overshadowed by the recent avalanche of great, new games that have been coming out. 2k annouced on the Cult of Rapture blog that there will be a patch released for the game next week and it will be bundled with cool new content for the X360 and PC. They have not elaborated on what this content may or may not be, but I figure most people are betting on new plasmids. This content is coming almost hand-in-hand with the new Halo 3 maps on December 4th. So, everyone get exicted for some new refreshing content.
There are many gamers among us who believe that the end of this year will be one of the greatest seasons in the industry’s history. Well my friends, I think we can safely say that the storm has officially begun. If there is any game capable of signaling the complete and utter end to a summer gaming drought, BioShock is it.
As the first of the E3 uber-hyped games to come out this season, BioShock had a lot to live up to. Luckily, the game does not fall short of it’s expectations at all. From its epic plotline to its refreshingly original style of play, this action RPG/shooter delivers more than its fair share of excitement during its 15-20 hour run. The action doesn’t have to stop there either, as there is definitely something to be said about BioShock’s replay value as well. Let’s take an in depth look at the different elements that make this game the blockbuster hit that it is.
BioShock has been out for a couple of days now and there has been an endless debate on whether DX10 is worth it. This is basically a PC VS. 360 argument because the PC version of the game is DX10. Gametrailers.com has posted a side-by-side comparison video of the two. So you can decide for yourself. Personally, I think they look exactly the same, but the PC version is brighter. I also saw a slight difference in framerate which could just be the video. Post your opinions in the comments!
The wait is almost over! The missing PC demo for Bioshock will be coming out tomorrow, Monday August 20th. At 7PM EST the demo will go live and be available for download from 2k’s site. For more information on the demo, check out 2kgames.com.
Since this fall/winter looks huge for video games in general and keeping track of all the great games coming out may be a challenge. We thought it might be nice to start this segment highlighting all the good games and demoes you should be playing next week.
BioShock — Xbox 360, PC
BioShock is the kinda game that will probably have to be in your gaming collection. This game has been getting perfect scores from all gaming outlets. Featuring a dynamic storyline with great ambience and tons of customizable options, BioShock delivers at a time when games hardly have innovation. It is the perfect way of get into this year’s first-person shooter featuring 8 different guns each with 3 different types of ammo and it brings something else to the table, Plasmids. Plasmids are certain powers that you gain such as ElectroShock, Incenerate, Controling AI Players, Duplication yourself and many many more. Plasmids add a lot to already huge game. So, BioShock is a must-have for this week and even,if you don’t want the game right now be sure to get the demo on Xbox 360 (one for the PC should be available soon) because you will want it after playing the demo.
Beautiful Katamari Demo — Xbox 360 This week a Beautiful Katamari Demo was released on the Xbox 360 featuring only one level and about 3 minutes of play time. But, the demo does show how fun Katamari really is. There isn’t really much to the demo except it does look as good as Katamari can look. I stress good because Katamari is in it’s own artstyle, which can appeal to some and not to others. But, this is a fun 500MB download. So, you should download it to see if Katamari is your type of game.
If you are still jonesing for a copy of BioShock and Toys R’ Us is no longer sell it, you may be in luck. Steam and Direct2Drive, IGN’s game download service, are offering the game for pre-load and playability the second the game becomes available. So, if you want to be playing the game at 12:00 A.M. on August 21st, this would be the correct way to go. The game is $49.99, but Direct2Drive is offering a $5 gift certificate with your purchase, but with that you are also risking the chance of not getting the game because the site does say “approximately August 21st”. So, don’t say you weren’t warned if you don’t get it right away.
This news comes when there are many rumors circulating about BioShock coming out on an earlier date because of the Toys R’ Us incident and a commercial that was leaked that announces the game is already out. This was disapproved when Irrational Games(formely) announced that the game is keeping its August 21st launch date and these were just a series of coincidences. Either way, you should be excited for BioShock.
