Bill Gates’ CES Keynote Wrap Up

ces-logo.jpg

Well that’s it for the Microsoft Keynote, which means that CES 2008 is officially underway! While it is sad to see Bill Gates delivering his last CES presentation, we did get a good amount of Xbox 360 news out of the event.

First and foremost, we know that many of you may have been expecting an announcement involving the ‘Ultimate Xbox 360′, a 360 SKU that would come equipped with a built in HDDVD player and a huge HDD. Sadly, however, no announcement of said console was made during the presentation, so it looks like the Xbox 360 Elite is still the king of Microsoft SKUs for now.

Its not all bad though, as we did find out that ABC Television and MGM will be bringing high def content to the Xbox Live Video Marketplace, and that the UK company BT will be the first to use the 360 as an IPTV set-top box. We also got to see Robbie Bach face off against Bill Gates in GHIII, even if it did end up actually become a battle between GH champion “TipperQueen” (on Robbie Bach’s side) versus Slash (backing up Bill Gates on a real guitar).

Oh and we can’t forget about the numbers. According to Robbie Bach, Xbox Live has hit 10 million users already. That’s 6 months earlier than expected and quite an impressive announcement indeed. We also heard from Mr. Bach that American consumers have spent more on the Xbox 360 in 2007 than on the Wii and PS3 combined, and that the Xbox branch has done $3.5 billion of business this year ($1 billion more than Nintendo did with the Wii and $2 billion more than Sony’s PS3). Looks like the 360 is on a good track!

So there you have it. CES has begun and Mr. Gates has spoken for what is perhaps the last time on a CES stage. Expect much more news from Rotpod throughout all 4 days of CES, and make sure you stay updated!
