The next title of the Halo franchise is coming up right around the corner, and the latest trailer is good enough to excite people who’ve never even played any of the games before. Such an awesome trailer has left me at a loss for words, so I’ll just let you all see it right now.
Oh, there is one thing. Please let Peter Jackson’s Halo movie go into production!
As you can probably tell from the title of this post, the latest installment of Modern Warfare is back and looks better than ever. But don’t think the new and exciting features stop there. To name a few more, Infinity Ward’s latest work will feature killer graphics (I must remind you that the visuals you see below are in from gameplay footage), standalone spec-ops missions (think Mile-High Club from the end of the last game), brand new weapons and equipment, and, of course, a thrilling campaign.
I’m sure all of you avid Modern Warfare fans know all of this already, so without further delay, check out the stunning video below, featured in full HD glory. Be sure to watch until the end to satisfy your inner geek.
According to this blog, we should be expecting the next installment in the Guitar Hero series on October 26, 2008. Apparently the game will have 85 soundtracks, including the 43 songs which appear after the jump that were announced early. If that’s not good enough for you Guitar Hero rockers, then the news that both the likeness and songs of Ozzy Osbourne himself will appear in the game definitely should blow you away. We’re talking Ozzy as a playable character, and “Ozzfest” as a venue. Check after the jump for the songs released so far.
It looks like somebody at the FCC let something slip about a new PS3 model coming to the market. NeoGAF forum members have spotted that their website had a different ID for another 80 GB model of the console. (If you happened to be wondering, it’s AK8CBEH1101. As opposed to AK8CBEH1100. You’d think they could put a little more creativity into the task, no?) Anyway, digressions aside, look for better Bluetooth and Wi-fi functionality with improved antenna gain. More specs are being withheld until April 14, but stay tuned for what could be an outrageously exciting development, or a tragic letdown. At the very least, be happy with what you actually get.
KontrolFreek’s novel device can only be described as a godsend for all gamers who are accuracy-challenged. The company who brought you SpeedFreek has developed a crutch dubbed FPS Freek for all Xbox 360 controllers. It’s meant to be used in FPS games (of course), to nudge along anyone who just can’t line up those headshots. The add-on fits on top of the original 360 thumbstick, and works by lengthening the stick to provide less resistance. Apparently, moving the thumbstick in the first 20% range of motion is the hardest because of a all the spring resistance. With FPS Freek, you should be able to make small adjustments to your aiming with less effort. Even though anyone who uses this will most likely be called out by their friends, it is may still be legal in competitions. Not many have actually verified the benefits, but IGN did review an earlier prototype. Wait for June 1, 2008 if you want to try it out. And put your gaming reputation on the line.
Nintendo announced a new beta test available in Japan for those wanting to help and earn some money as well (US $8.40 per hour). The job will have hours from 10a.m. to 5p.m. every weekday at the Kyoto Headquarters’ Research Division. The exciting part is that the test is rumored to possibly be for Mario Kart Wii, which is heavily anticipated and is potentially record-breaking. No other news about this games actual gameplay has surfaced, but a likely preview of the legitimate box art has been floating around (pictured above). If this test is for Mario Kart Wii, it will create a huge stir among all fans. Even the prospect of this being true has kindled our spirits.
Ubisoft’s stunning medieval assassination experience will find itself in the PC market in March. The game had already picked up 2.5 million sales within a month, and the number sold has only increases recently. This PC port should bring an even wider audience, with a a lower $50 price tag. Ubisoft plans to address some of the complaints of the repeition in the game by integrating four brand new investigation techniques into the upcoming release. With the established acclaim of the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, consumers should already have a reason to pick up the PC version.
Sure, this might have slipped out before when the packaging for the new Rock Band mic declared that it worked on the Xbox 360, the PS3, and the Wii. But was that just a typo? After all, Electronic Arts, Rock Band’s publisher, never announced a Wii version, even after Harmonix hinted at it. It turns out that the microphone did, indeed, broadcast the truth. John Riccitiello, CEO of EA, alluded to an upcoming Rock Band title for the Wii during a press call. Furthermore, EA announced that Rock Band would be released for all SKUs some time this year, which would of course mean a Wii launch as well. Hopefully the Wii version will have all the cool features we have grown to love, and many more.
With all the consoles moving towards an online approach focused heavily on social gaming, it only makes sense that such a system should develop for the PC as well. Currently Microsoft’s Live for Windows, Gamespy, and Steam all are slowly stepping into the social zone, but none of them have fully made it in. Valve plans to change that by making their application the standard connectivity tool for all major PC games. To get a general idea, try to imagine Xbox Live working with games like Counter-Strike and Crysis.
Valve’s name for this project is Steamworks, and their plan is to give it freely to developers and publishers. They hope to dominate online PC gaming by working directly with the source. Besides social networking, Steamworks will feature server browsing, which Steam is already known best for, and copy protection, to appeal especially to game-makers. Honestly, this move could have been expected by most average users of Steam: in such a short time it has gone from a simple application to organize and connect to Valve games, to a multi-faceted, not to mention stylish, program that heavily features games from a plethora of companies. With the recent release of the Steam Community, it delved even further into the world of social gaming. Check after the jump for more details on the tools Steamworks will support, and some quotes from Valve.
If you are a science fiction lover like me, you will certainly be excited to hear that Orson Scott Card has agreed to partner with Chair Entertainment in order to create a video game based on his award-winning novel. Chair, known best for its production of Undertow, plans to release the game on all platforms: next-generation consoles, handheld consoles, and the PC. The gameplay will center around the Battle Room aspect of the novel, in which Ender and his fellow prodigies practiced fighting simulations in a zero-gravity environment. In the novel, strategic use of the opposing platoons was vital to succeeding in the exercise, and hopefully this element will carry over effectively to the game. We don’t know if the video game will also feature the engaging plot of Ender’s Game, in which humanity is faced with the might of the devastating and hostile alien race known as the “Buggers.” If it does, expect some real-time space strategy as well. Check out the press release after the jump.
Future Brawlers all around the world may now rest assured that one of the most popular characters of Melee features prominently in the new title. As before, players can transform into Sheik by using Zelda’s Special Down move. Sheik’s special moves also match exactly with her previous barrage of attacks. However, Sakurai has not yet revealed what exactly her Final Smash, “Light Arrow,” will do. This news may simply be some consolation for the recent release date delay, but most of us do not mind that at all. I’m personally relieved that Sheik is confirmed with 100% certainty. Hopefully, she will still wow us with lightning quick smashes and a brand new model.
Really, who didn’t expect something like this to happen? It all seemed to good to be true. With exciting announcements that got us all to the edges of our seats and the simple prospect of having fun with a revamped classic, Brawl truly seemed like the next game that would capture our spirits for years to come. While this still hopefully will apply to the game when it is released, it looks like the folks here in the U.S. will have to wait until Sunday, March 9 to experience Nintendo’s next hit. With this untimely delay, Brawl better contain nothing that could dampen our spirits, but brim with pure comic mayhem.
Not too many people could have seen this coming just years ago. And yet, it has: the largest sports network in the world has agreed to cover the latest news from MLG tournaments. Sure, the agreement may only be with MLG for now, but if successful, a huge demand for pro gaming news could erupt. Not only will ESPN cover post-game results, but will feature live streams of matches and updates stats on all tournament players. All this and more can be found on ESPN’s new MLG page. It seems that some top ESPN execs believe gaming will provide just what future generations of fans want to see. “Adding MLG content to our already comprehensive offering will help us continue to deliver the best news, information and entertainment to our growing gaming audience,” said John Kosner, senior vice president and general manager of ESPN digital media. The agreement is a historic day for gaming, and could bring video game tournaments up to the changing mainstream audiences over time.
With the recent downpour from various film production companies announcing full support of the Blu-ray high-definition media format, Microsoft seemed, simply put, screwed. As the backers of the rival format, HD DVD, Microsoft created an optional HD-DVD drive for the Xbox 360. Most speculated that this feature would be rendered obsolete in the near future. Although, of course, Blu-ray will never work on this particular drive, Albert Penello, director of global marketing for the Xbox 360, stated that the company would be able to ship a Blu-ray drive if Sony’s format became the new standard. Apparently, Microsoft never even considered plans for integrating the HD DVD drive into the 360 itself. Despite opening up this new option, Penello still assures us all that Microsoft will not give up on HD DVD just yet. Saying, “Until Toshiba goes out of business, this war is not over,” he argued that consumers actually prefer HD DVD, and the studios simply made the wrong choice. If, as is currently most likely, HD DVD dies out, all Xbox 360 users can rest assured that Blu-ray will be available for them as well without a standalone player.
In a stunning revelation that will most likely pioneer the route for THX towards video games, Sierra stated that Prototype, being developed by Radical Entertainment, will feature THX 7.1 surround sound. This certainly seems like overkill, and of course costs more than a normal set up, but there are definitely users who would kill for such a high-end sound setup. Such elaborate audio for a video game may seem a bit unnecessary, but if this works well, we may be seeing THX much more often. Employing 7 speakers and a subwoofer, the developers plan on engaging the most wild audio experience in a video game ever. The vast majority of gamers with only two, or even five, speakers, unfortunately, won’t experience the marvel of THX. Audiophiles (or those who think you are): begin the countdown!
EA cast aside (with accurate physics) rumors regarding a Crysis port for the 360 yet again. After many flip-flops and subtle hints regarding the port, this announcement really should be expected by most all of us. EA also denies the legitimacy of a recent listing by an Austrian retailer for Crysis pre-orders. Whether they actually are telling the final truth this time or not, it is no secret that the Crysis trademark could really go for a little more sales than it currently musters, as an exclusive PC title with lofty system requirements. Even if EA doesn’t have any plans for a port, if they plan on making some money on this game, they really should begin coming up with some ideas.
Take a look at the image above. It looks like Starcraft–one of the most influential and best-selling RTS games ever to grace the PC. Well, check again. What you see is actually a screenshot of Starlite, the fruits of two French DS homebrew developers’ hard work. These developers took it upon themselves to allow everyone to play Starcraft on the DS, with no official announcements on a port. The homebrew is still very early in development, but there is no question that many would love to be able to carry such a memorable game around on a portable medium. The shocker is the fact that the developers have produced the current version after just three weeks of work. With your DS, you can control units with the touchscreen, build some structures, and combat a few enemies. Eventually, the team hopes to make a much more robust game, playable over Wi-Fi for two people. Check the link below for more screenshots and a download for the early demo.
If you are a frequent Xbox Live user, you have no doubt felt the recent pain of intermittent Live downtime. This came as quite a disappointment to the myriad Live users excited to test out some of the games they received over the holidays. Apparently Microsoft knows how to sympathize, as an unnamed worker at Microsoft has stated:
…we will definitely be doing something for our Gold members that weren’t able to get online over the last week.
Although some type of compensation seems only fair, there has literally been no further mention of this news anywhere else. Details are completely absent, but this news sure comes as a treat. It is also quite confusing about how Microsoft will go about issuing this compensation, as they still have not officially acknowledged that Live was ever down. All we can do now is begin making some predictions on what the gift could be.
