Xbox 360 Price Drop: It’s (Almost) Official!

360pricecutcc.jpg

A Joystiq reader has sent in an image of a Circuit City flyer which basically ends all of the speculation about an Xbox 360 price cut. After a few sketchy images of a Toys R Us as and one from Wal-Mart surfaced, it all started to look like it was coming true. This clear picture pretty much confirms it for us, and shows that the Xbox 360 Pro Console will in fact drop $50 to $349.99. But wait, that’s not all! The other 2 SKUs of the console will get their price tags slashed as well, with the Core dropping $20 to $279.99, and the Elite diving $30 down to $450. According to the Circuit City flyer, these new prices will go into effect on August 12, so hold off just a little longer on buying a 360 if you were planning to.

Konami Shortens MGS4 Release Window; Addresses Multiplatform Possibilities

solidsnake.jpg

An attendee of today’s Konami analyst meeting is reporting that Konami President Fumiaki Tanaka announced some new details regarding MGS4’s release date and the possibilities of MGS games on other platforms. According to this insider, Tanaka confirmed that MGS4 will be hitting store shelves in Q4 of March ‘08. He also stated that an exact release date will be announced at this year Tokyo Game Show.

The other major point from this meeting comes from another one of President Tanaka’s quotes. During the meeting, he stated:

“As we are aware of the popularity and hardware-driving power of this software franchise, going forwards we are open to taking this franchise across to other platforms.”

Does this mean that Konami is still considering bring MGS4 to the Xbox 360? Perhaps he is talking about games in the MGS franchise in general. We will have to wait and see!

  • London, England
  • St. Petersburg, Russia
  • Tokyo, Japan
  • New York, USA

Update: Bizzare Creations has put the DVD constraint worries to rest with recent comments on the issue.

FBI Searches Home of Ted Stevens

Sen. Ted Stevens (R), Alaska, who was made famous on the internet for his famous gaffes made while during the net neutrality debate several months ago. He compared the internet to a “series of tubes”, as opposed to a “big truck”, and ranted about how it took days for “an internet” his staff sent him to arrive. He also sponsored bill S.49, which was intended to block any site with user accounts from public schools and libraries. The FBI search is part of an ongoing investigation with the IRS of the senator’s ties to oil services companies. In his 80s Sen. Stevens is the longest currently serving senate member and the longest severing republican ever, this apparently makes him expertly qualified to deal with modern issues regarding the internet.

A Little Break From Gaming: Things From the Internets

Everyone needs a little excitement, humor, and things that do not involve gaming sometimes. And here is some of that:

Brady Bunch? Well, Greg Brady ( Barry Williams ) was supposedly stoned during the filming of this scene of the Brady Bunch.

Microsoft Annouces HDDVD Price Drop and Special Offer

benchmark-microsoft-hddvd-addon.jpg

Well as of yesterday BluRay gained more supporters with Target annoucing its loyalty to BluRay this holiday season. This backed by the same move made by Blockbuster may make HDDVD supporters feel a little queezy with a sense that they may be headed the way of BetaMax. But fear not, Microsoft is here to help all you lost souls with a price drop of it’s HDDVD add-on for the 360. The add-on is now going to be $179.99 and will also be coming with five free HDDVD movies between August 1st and September 30th. This is a deal similar to one that is incorporated with BluRay players, but who cares about details. But, is this just a failed attempt to help a format that is dieing or is it the great revival that the format needs to win the war. Who Knows? But, maybe I’ll buy this add-on now…

Ferrari F430 Hits the Wall During PGR4 Commercial Filming

PGR is a great series and a favorite of racing and Xbox 360 fans, alike. And no doubt that PGR4 is a very anticipated game with its great enviroments and its realistic cars. So realistic that Microsoft thought that filming the real Ferrari F430 would be an adequate replacement. But, there was a mishap during the filming of this Ferrari, the F430 hit the wall. And here is the hit in a video from YouTube.

And here is an upclose of the damage.

Bully…Again!

Does anyone remember that Rockstar game Bully? Remember? The one that got a bunch of publicity for being GTA for teens in a school setting? Remember? Okay, now that I have refreshed your memory on a game that had its fifteen minutes of fame, lets get to the real story. A new addition of the game is coming to the Wii and Xbox 360. Wait! No PS3? Yes! You heard right. This new addition will be called Bully: Scholarship Addition, and will have new content, but details have not been released. Personally, I think that this is another blow for Sony’s Playstation brand. R* used to be a developer that mainly only made games for Playstation’s consoles. Now, it has been increasingly unfaithful, which may be a sign that the PS3 may not do too well in the coming years.

Rumor: OXM Reports MGS4 for 360 May Hit a Few Months After PS3 Version

solidsnake.jpg

A reader over at Joystiq’s Xbox360fanboy has pointed them to the ‘Rumor Mill’ segment of latest Official Xbox Magazine issue, where the MGS4 for Xbox 360 rumors seem to be all but dead. According to the magazine, a ‘bankable source’ has filled them in on the real deal behind the port. The source has apparently told them that there is another team at Konami that is working on porting the game over to the 360 which Kojima-san is not in charge of, and that we will see the game released only a few short months after the Playstation 3 version hits store shelves.

This seems to be one of the more reliable of the many rumors about the game’s alleged Xbox 360 version, but we will have to wait and see until there is either direct clarification or denial of the project from Konami to find out what is really going on.

Halo 3 To Ship Without Online Co-Op?

masterchiefstares.jpg

Yeah you read that question right, and I will warn you now, the answer may really piss you off. Although the Halo team over at Bungie has been working on getting online 2-4 player cooperative play into the game, gamers will likely be finishing the fight all by their lonesome come this September. According to an EGM article on the subject, due to various issues Halo 3 will most likely not come with online co-op capabilities out of the box, but we may see the function come with the help of an update or DLC.

Bungie’s Frankie cited a few major problems that could prevent the feature from coming at launch, including a situation in which the two players could be over a mile apart at any given time. Ugh. Let’s just hope that if this doesn’t make it in time to ship with the game, that it hits XBL sooner rather than later.

The Peter Moore Resignation Fact Sheet

petermoorehalotat.jpg

There has been a lot of hazy reporting over the last two days about Peter Moore’s resignation, and now that the dust has cleared I have decided to put all the info and links into one definitive post. So without further ado, here is the Peter Moore Resignation Fact Sheet.

  • Peter Moore announced his resignation on the 17th and that he would be taking up a job at EA Games as the Head of the EA Sports branch of the company. Microsoft and EA confirmed this on the same day.
  • The reason for Moore’s departure from Microsoft had to do with his family wanting to return to the Bay Area in California, and this EA position will allow them to live and work where they feel at home. His resignation did not have anything to do with the recent 3 year warranty business, and I am pretty sure that everyone is accepting that as fact. All of the theories about him leaving for these reasons should really be put to rest.
  • Don Mattrick will sit in as Peter Moore’s replacement, who’s background in the industry includes being the President of EA, and an External Adviser at Microsoft up until now. He will step in at the end of August as Moore will stick around to halp with the transition until then. Mattrick has said that he does not think he needs to do any major tweaking at his new Xbox position, as the branch has been run very well up until now.
  • Moore’s salary info at EA was announced after the press release detailing his resignation. His base salary will be $550,000 dollars and he is entitled to a discretionary target bonus of up to 75% of this. In addition, during his first 30 days at EA, Mr. Xbox 360 will receive a $1.5 million dollar signing bonus to assure he stays on board for at least 2 years. If he leaves within his first 2 years at the company, he will be responsible for paying that bonus back to the company. If Peter does indeed stay fro 2 years, he will receive 25,000 company shares, and 25,000 more will be granted to him after 4 years at EA. On top of all that, Moore will be getting $330,000 in moving expenses to help him get back to the Bay Area. Damn!
  • Peter Moore says farewell to Microsoft, the Xbox community, and Major Nelson during the latest episode of Major Nelson Radio. In the interview, Moore talks about the reason for his decision and his future at EA and in the Bay Area.

After all is said and done, I don’t think anyone wants to see Peter Moore depart from his position above the platform that he helped build and make successful, but as he says during his Major Nelson Radio interview, his family’s wishes must come first over his desire to stay at a certain job. It will certainly be tough for Mattrick to fill the shoes of the former face of Xbox, but Microsoft seems to have utmost confidence in his ability to get the job done. From Halo 2 and GTA IV tattoos, to his recent foray into the world of Video Game Music Simulators with Rock Band, everyone can remember something about Peter Moore’s time at the company. Let’s just hope his successor is half the public speaker and figure as he was.

Edit: I just noticed that I kept saying retirement instead of resignation during the post (including in the title). Oops. Sorry about that, I fixed it now.

HD Update: HD DVD Sales Growing Over Falling Blu-ray Numbers

hddvdlogo.jpg

The Home Media Expo 2007 is underway this week in Las Vegas and HD DVD has used the forum to show off their latest sales numbers as compared to Blu-ray’s. According to Nielsen Netratings, HD DVD player sales are up 37% from Q1 to Q2 of this year, and software sales are up 20%. Blu-ray sales on the other hand have dropped significantly over the same time period however, with player sales dropping 27% and software sales down 5%.

Since HD DVD’s new marketing tactics have been applied, which include things such as price drops and movie offers, sales have been much better for the format. For the previously mentioned quarter, HD DVD dedicated player sales are up 183% and 80,000 players have been sold since April. This brings the total number of HD DVD player sales up to about 180,000.
