Obese Gamer Collapses in Northeastern China

An obese 26 year old man in Northeastern China collapsed Saturday on the final day of an online gaming tournament spanning the Chinese Lunar festival. The man was from Jinzhou, in Liaoning province. The gamer spent “almost all” of the seven day break playing video games China Daily said, citing his parents. Xu Yan, a local school teacher, said that the “dull” break usually prompts students to video-games or some other form of electronic entertainment. “There are only two options. TV or computer. What else can I do in the holiday as all markets, KTV and cafeterias are shut down?” the paper quoted Xu as saying. 13 percent of China’s 20 million internet users are under the age of 18 and are classified as addicts to video games, says state media.

Star Trek XI – DEC 08

trek.jpgYesterday Paramount officially confirmed the long rumored Star Trek movie entitled “Star Trek XI”. More importantly they gave a firm release date of December 25th 2008. With a Christmas release it’s clear that Paramount is taking this venture seriously. Produced by J.J. Abrams (Mission Impossible III), the film will be a prequel to TOS and will feature a young Spock and Kirk in the Academy. Much controversy surrounds the as of yet unannounced choices for Kirk and Spock. This is the first time in franchise history that a major character has been played by a new actor. Added to the fact that both Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner are so closely identified with their Star Trek characters, any choice will be sure to piss a significant faction of Trekkies off. No matter who they choose, any sort of film success will be important in getting Trek back on its TV home. The franchise survived for years after TOS ended on the shoulders of the often mediocre movies while TV has been trekless since the prequel “Enterprise” failed miserably.

Ubuntu Prepares for Next Release

UbuntuAustrailian developers have sealed the code for the next test of Ubuntu (Herd 5), a distribution of Linux which was initialy released back in October of 2006. Ubuntu is an African word for “Humanity for Others”. a phrase that fits in with the open source attitude of “Linux for Humans”. Ubuntu uses their own GUI desktop system and contains over 16,000 software components that are amazingly compressed down to fit on a single disc. The main code for Ubuntu has been finished, however no further changes will be allowed. This release candidate is scheduled to be available this Thursday, and the full version is expected to be available mid April ‘07. “Ubuntu’s Feisty release will put the spotlight on multimedia enablement and desktop effects. We expect this to be a very gratifying release for both users and developers,” said Mark Shuttleworth, founder of the Ubuntu project. “I and others do believe that 3D is an essential part of the modern desktop experience. It is difficult to buy a PC or laptop that does not include such hardware, and in terms of transistor count it’s almost as much as your CPU these days.” Ubuntu will make a great operating system for people with old hardware that they want to put back to use. The current version of Ubuntu 6.10 includes OpenOffice2.0, Firefox, Integrated Mail and Scheduling, and the Rythmbox Media Player. Additional software can also be downloaded with an integrated catalogue.

“You’re Kinda a Pirate”: Microsoft Gets More Lenient

masthead_en.gifWindows’s Genuine Advantage(WGA) is Microsoft’s tool to catch pirates trying to get updates. This tool is probably hated by most because it rejects 1 out of 5 people, most of which do not even pirate software. Microsoft is getting a plethora of complaints because of this tool and it’s habit of falsely identifying thousands of people as pirates who aren’t, but Microsoft seems have eased up a little with changing the characteristics that characterize you as a criminal. This will hopefully help those people that were being accused of pirates falsely. The labels will now be genuine, not genuine or “maybe”. This tool, while helping users, also helps Microsoft in it’s fight against piracy by letting them know what some users are doing and let them decide later on what is considered piracy or fair play. However, this is also being scrutinized for making some users miss important updates and WGA also sends back personal information and is sure to bring lawsuits to Microsoft. WGA was never really popular but, at least this tool will help some of the users.

Metal Gear Online Servers to Close Down

mgs4_e32k6_15.jpgMetal Gear 3 Subsistance provided a new stealth based online experience that many MGS fans cherished, but it looks as if Konami overestimated how many people would play it. Although the game itself sold relitivly well, the online players were on comprised of a small fraction of those who bought it. As a result of this, today Konami updated their MGS:O support site letting the readers know that April 3rd ‘07 will be the last day to play online. In the same update, Konami encourages their fans to play MGS: Portable Ops online instead, but I’m sure it’s just not the same.

As always seems to happen in these situations, the small fanbase of the online play is throwing together an online petition in an attempt to change Konami’s collective mind. However, it is very doubtful that this decision will be reversed by the company’s higher ups.

Iron Man Movie Details

621new_storyimage6799061_full.jpg

Iron Man has always been a great superhero but, he has been getting a lot of bad credit from anti-registration act fans. But spite all of this the Iron Man feature film is set to come out in 2008 with Tony Stark and Iron-Man being played by Robert Downey Jr. , which in my opinion is not who I pictured to play Iron-Man. But, this may be a good choice because of Downey’s wide array of talents in different types of roles which would allow him to adapt easily to the very different world’s of Iron Man and Tony Stark. Downey will also portray the sadness and tragicness that is portrayed in Tony Stark’s life. The story ,however, will probably focus on brining up Tony Stark to his height as Iron Man and his climb from the bottom to the top. A great fit for this would probably be Ellis’s storyarc in Iron Man: Extremis which emphasizes Tony Stark’s need to help everyone around him and become a great person but, to emphasize the different aspects of Tony Stark a mix of Demon in a Bottle may be thrown in which would give it a more movie like feel. In 2006, the super hero movies in my opinion were declining in quality and 2007 doesn’t seem to look that good ethier. Let’s hope that Spider-man 3 and Iron-Man can be great comicbook based movies. The cast will also include Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges, and Terrence Howard

Capcom Buys Unreal Engine 3 Rights

dead-rising-footer.jpgIs it just me, or does it seem as if the newest Unreal Engine is slated to achieve world domination? As more and more game developers sign up for the UE3 engine, it looks like it’s on course to become a new standard in gaming. Well it’s time to add Capcom to that seemingly neverending list as they have just announced that they are going to use the engine in development of one of their upcoming titles. No word as to what said game will be, but we can hope it will be more of a ‘Dead Rising’ Capcom title rather than a ‘Pokemon Battle’ one.

PAL PS3 EE Removal

ps3.jpgThe Emotion Engine and the Reality Synthesizer are the heart of both the PS2 and the NTSC PS3 backwards compatibility. The EE however will not be making the journey across the pond. Backwards compatibility will be handled through software emulation, like the 360s. Sadly there will be less games that work. While for a few days rumors of this have been flying around, the situation was confermed by SCEE’s blog Three Speech.

Halo to become a Comic Series

078512372501lzzzzzzz.jpgAt NY ComicCon Bendis and Maleev annouced that after the success of the Halo graphic novel, they would be starting a entire comic series and Marvel will be going all out with this series. This is sure to be a great series with the people behind the New Avengers and Ultimate Spiderman, I’m pretty sure it can not go bad or at least let’s hope it doesn’t. But, is this new swing of Halo into the comics a sign that it is getting to big? The game that once started out as a unknown Xbox launch title has now become everyone’s “favorite” game and is Bungie really ready for all these different storylines that are bound to come out. Halo may just be the start and could be a signal into what gaming is going to develop into which would be a industry that rivals both movies and books in influence and following.

ComicCon 2007: World War: Hulk

hulk.jpg

February 24th, 2007 – World War: Hulk is Marvel’s upcoming event that helps Marvel evolve past Civil War and get more into action. Although being lighter on the story, Greg Pak, the writer, assures as that somethings will be revealed in World War:Hulk or the companion storyline in the Incredible Hulk The storyline does focus on the relationship between Bruce Banner and Hulk and would reveal some things about the relationship. With Pak writing the storyline and John Romita Jr. and Klaus Janson handling the art, I think we can expect good things.

The side events for this will include a prolouge, World War Hulk: X-Men, World War Hulk: Gamma Corps, and World War Hulk: Front Line. The companion storyline will also be writeen in Pak and will run parellel to World War: Hulk with appreances by She-Hulk, Mastermind Excel, and Namor.

World War Hulk: X-Men will address the fact that Xavier was not with the X-Men in Illumanati and also bring all the X-Men back together when Hulk only finds a few. This will be written by Chris Cage and art by Andrea DiVito and Ed McGuiness. World War Hulk: Gamma Corps  focuses on the destruction that Hulk causes during the War and the troops that go to take him down. The book will focus on villians as said by Frank Tieri, the writer, and the artist is Carlos Ferreira. Front Line will concentrate on the real aspect of the war at the down to earth level and will be a continutation of Front Line from Civil War.

Others that will come in are Iron Man, featuring him leading S.H.I.E.L.D., Ghost Rider, and Heroes for Fire. The Avenger:Initiative will also tie in with their involvement in S.H.I.E.L.D.. With the company stressing that nothing will be undone that happened in Civil War, many asked if Thor would battle the Hulk and the panel tried to remain as quiet as possible about the subject but, some believe that he might be featured.

February 24th, 2007daredevil88.jpg

  1. The Halo graphic novel is set to release this summer and it is set to get all excited with the news that Daredevil creators, Bendis and Maleev will be creating it. How can you not love a graphic novel about Halo created by these writers and artists.

  3. Matt Murdock(Daredevil) will feature his demise in the new series Daredevil:The End Days. Brian Bendies and Bill Sienkiewicz will be doing the writing and art, respectively.
  4. The next big news was about two new mini events spinning of Annihilation. The first Annihiliation: Conquest is a direct seqeul of Annihiliation. This will be a 3 part mini-series and is called Quasar. And a new Marvel character, Wraith, was also announced for the end of the series. The second spin off will be focued on the more mystic Marvel characters and is suppose to shead light on parts of the Marvel Universe that are still not described well.

I’ll try to update this article more as I get my thoughts together but, be sure to check back in for more news on the other keynotes.

NeoGeo Comes to the VC on the Wii

mslug103.pngThe NeoGeo by SNK was possibly the most expensive console ever(even beating the PS3) with a console at $649 in 1990 and games that were about $200 a pop, were their even people around to play those games in 1990? Well, of course their were and now they can begin to play them on the Wii’s Virtual Console, if you are in japan, that is. Nintendo annouced that it will have two MSX games at launch, Eggy and Aleste, for 800 Wii points. Nintendo also annouced a whole lot of other publishers and they will be bringing games like Metal Slug and Phantom Fighter to the VC. Let’s just hope these additions come to America ASAP.

ComicCon 2007: Saturday

TODAY WAS THE SECOND DAY OF COMICCON!! It was totally sold out! We got to Javits ~11:00 AM and although the show had been open for an hours, the entry line stretched around the center and down 2 blocks. We got inside at noon and were greeted with a packed con. Unfortunately we missed the Q/A with BSG cast members but the day was only beginning. Comics, manga, toys, weapons and dvds were all for sale, with choices for every taste. The 1st floor gaming lounge is probably the bets kept secret of the con. Free from the omnipresent crowds and filled to the ceiling with free Rockstar stuff this oasis of gaming fun was a good refuge for any one looking for a break from all the comics. Todays big event: 1.5 hour Q/A with Clerks director and fellow New Jerseyan Kevin Smith. More on that later but to : Hilarious. Comic Con seems to be less crowded this year, even though there seem to bee just as many or more people. It also seems cleaner and more organized. Its nice to see this young con grow into its own!

ComicCon 2007: Friday

TODAY WAS THE FIRST DAY OF COMICCON!!!!! We got there at around 4:30 p.m. and the show had been open to the public for at least 30 minutes. The show was buzzing with people and kept on getting busier. Their was a really big line to get in but, it was moving at a good pace and it seemed to be much more organized than last year. Once getting inside the show floor, I noticed less crowded aisles and bigger booths this year as opposed to last. And also a big change was the heavier video games influence ,which included a Playstation booth, UGO booth, Konami booth, and some indivitual game booths like one for Darkness(a HORRIBLE game). The day was also packed with stars with people like Stan Lee, Steven Colbert and many more. There were autographing sessions with Steven Colbert and Stan Lee but, their was a ticket purchase and all of these tickets has been sold out even before the show opened in the morning and were also very few in number i.e. 75 tickets for Steven Colbert. But, I did manage to get Gary Coleman’s autograph ,which may not be a Stan Lee but, “what you talking about willis?!?!?!” was worth it. The booths did seem less filled with “free stuff” and but, this may change with tommorow because it is suppose to be the main day and we can expect even longer lines, more people, and hopefully more fun with Kevin Smith and Stan Lee lectures.

Morrison Corvette Scanned Into Gran Turismo

mor_02.jpgGran Turismo has always been known for being a great racing simulation and one thing that really add’s to the expirence is the great and realistic car modeling the comes with the game. This article at Jalopnik shows the Morrison Corvette being scanned for the upcoming Gran Turismo game. The team basically used a laser to map out the bumps and groves on the car and transmitting it to wireframe software that was collecting the data and here is a quote from Craig, a maker of the corvette:

“The first scan they did was the underside of the car. They did a pan of the chassis. As they were scanning it, in real time, there was a 3-D wireframe model being built of the car on the screen. You could actually see the relationship between the body mounts and the floor. You could see the exhaust and the clearance that the exhaust had. You could see the tread pattern on the tires, the horns, and all the fasteners holding those in place, the whole chassis, the headers, the oil pan – everything”

The top half of the car was scanned after with the same laser and when that was done, the wire-frame software finished up in a matter of seconds, Craig says. Pictures and videos were also taken for more detailed customization of the car later. From what I understand from the article, is that this system is very efficient and I would actually like to see this 3-D modeling software because it seems really amazing.

ESRB Rating: Now A Real Job

esrb.gif The ESRB, the group responsible for rating games has made the decision to hire full time raters. This move is in response to the recent controversy and ratings do-overs of recent memory.

Having full-time raters will allow for each one to have greater experience actually reviewing content and recommending ratings, given the increased amount of time each one would spend doing it.

While this will allow the raters to do a full play test before a rating is given, it is very unlikely that they would catch a Hot-Coffee like situation. One that requires modification to access.

Wii Wins January

nintendo_wii_1.jpgAccording to NPD Nintendo sold 436,000 Wiis in January compared to 299,000 PS2s the second place system. Based on NPD information Rotpod has compiled this table.

System 360 PS3 Wii
December 1,100,000 490,700 604,000
January 294,000 244,000 436,000

Although the 360 lead in the heavy spending month of December, this was more likely due to lack of wii supply rather than lack of consumer demand. Additionaly, with the Wiis low pricepoint, it is a more likely purchase outside of the normal spending periods.
Another blip on the horizon is the PS3s UK release. With pre-orders flying in the PSbrand seems to have kept its status in this traditionally Playstation loyal market. This area may be Sony’s best chance at an early success in the console war.

The article also has game sales information.
